I watched you with your son.
A wholly foreign affair.
I studied you with my clipboard
To understand the complexity
Of love and frustration.
The difficult choices
And the selflessness
Of parenthood.
But I only learned that I know
Nothing yet of the universe
Of the heart with its celestial
Objects pushing and pulling
One another apart one moment
Pressing together the next.
I witnessed a love where
One person can make you
Both so absolutely whole
And totally broken in the
Same moment that…
it quantifiably
Proves quantum mechanics.
I wish I could admit ignorance
Regarding how you can both
Know a person completely
And not at all. But such is
Human experience.
The moon loves the sun, reflects
It’s brilliance, but together they will be forever apart.
Bah! It is a fool who looks for logic in the chambers of the human heart.

“My child arrived just the other day. He came to the world in the usual way.
But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay.”
Into every life a few donuts must fall.
