You sang him a song when he was just a boy, tiny, tender upon your lap— Warm and safe and secure. Lyrics of growing up, and becoming anything. Lines that he was good and a beautiful boy. But along the way, the notes began to sour. The words grew tense. Warmth faded to distance. The world grew big, and the sounds weren’t soft. That promise began to fade. A heart-light dimmed. But you taught him well. To push through fear and loss, certain that daylight is only an hour away— Or maybe it’s two, or ten. Or maybe the big night’s just begun in the forest of lost dreams and fog. If he listens hard, above life’s wind and rain, he can hear your voice— faint and calm—full of love, It's promising that he’s almost free: Don’t give up, your strong heart won’t fail you, if you don’t fail yourself. I love you, little boy of mine, Let your restless mind ease,— The whole world loves you too— you just can’t see it yet.
