Sinéad

Before we met,
I never paid
Much attention between
The chorus and the bridge.
Now,
Thirsting for
every syllable
And chord.
So many firsts
With you.
In return
All you got
Was misery
And unhappiness.
Is someone
Now stretched
On your grave,
There next to Delores
And brother Nelson?
Gone are
The shame
And the pain,
Cast into the flame
You heard me
You saw me
You held me
You loved me
You left me
You broke my heart
Thank you for saving me
Thank you for showing me
I could have
A strong strong heart.

My wife introduced me to Sinead O’Conner in 1990. Always the skeptic, I rolled my eyes. Imagine trying to convince myself that 33 years later I’d know most of her lyrics by heart.
The absence of rules is the enemy of art, but what a tragedy that her rules were the prison of abuse and mental illness. Won’t it be nice when humans no longer have to live under such a corrupt and oppressive system? Fight the real power, indeed.
Incidentally, she is a difficult subject to capture a good likeness of. Drawing this I realized I frequently rely on hairdos and costuming to fake a decent drawing.
