A few weeks ago, I posted my monkey/banana smash-cut project: YAWYE (You Are What You Eat). I thought I'd share some images and renders of the animation process for your enjoyment. :-D
Initially, I planned this as a very straight-forward puppet animation in After Effects. But ever since I learned to draw frame-by-frame in Photoshop, I can’t help myself from drawing all this stuff. In the end, the results feel much better to me.
I LOVE Smears! In 2d, there's no motion blur (at least traditionally), so the masters figured out if you drew a single frame in a weird, elongated fashion, it would mimic motion blur. For YAWYE, I tried a different type of smear.
Monkey Arms
Originally I planned to just draw a single arm and animate its secondary swing motion in After Effects. But I didn't like how mechanical it looked, so I ended up drawing one or two additional poses, then two more then two more until the entire final arm swing is hand animated.
Stolen Color Palette
I struggle to know what color palettes I want. So I frequently find an image I like and just swipe the colors from it. Lazy, I know.
This animation is SO fast, I didn't think I'd need eyes. But of course, in the end there are little one frame darts and glances that give the character life. You always need eyes.
