Okay, I don't want to spoil your experience watching the new Iron Man 2 movie, but since it's unlikely that anyone will read this, I'll mention that it was okay. Overhyped. That's the word that best describes it. I mean they released an album for the film and everything... sheesh... it's a superhero movie. I know, I know, marketing is important, they have to (and deserve to) get ROI. This is an IP. It's only a superhero film. But seriously, I miss the good old days of simple anticipation. How about lead-in on a film like this where all you ever show is the chest symbol or glowy eyes.... something that gives me a little mystery. Please?
Spoiler: And at the end: how about NOT showing me what's in the crater? That would drive me NUTS. I'd talk and talk and talk about it. Wonder what it is. The hulk? Aliens? Another Avenger? Really, don't give away the farm. It might have just as well been a poster on the theater door that said "THOR! Coming soon". Maybe that's what it was for much of the public, but I doubt it.
And, what the heck was the deal with the timeline for Tony's creation of a new element? 8 hours? Where did he get the jack hammer? I mean he's dying, where is all of that power and strength coming from. A month maybe... a year more likely and even that would stretch the realm of belief. Why do these films have to stick to a 2 day timeline?
Don't get me wrong, if you care I DID have fun watching the film and my favorite line was the absolutely CORNY "I've got a severe attack of Hammeroids!" So so precious. It was what I expected and kind of wanted. I just don't think it needed a cross market, multi-million dollar marketing campaign. Trust me, for most people just a teaser is sufficient.
For what it's worth. It did rake in 133m over the weekend, so they obviously did something right.
Oh and I couldn't see Don Cheadle replacing Terrance Howard as Rhodes, but now I can't really see Howard playing the part. Cheadle just seems right.
