Make A Childhood
Oh, My Child!
Go play on the swings
Papa made for you.
Let your mother rest
Here for just a while.
The housework must wait,
As will Lunch and the errands.
Climb that mulberry tree,
But not too high!
And hold on tight
Lest you fall.
Lay in the grass
And watch the birds
as they flit about
And name the clouds
With your imagination.
Do not worry about
The grass stains on your knees
Or the bruises and bumps
You’ll get along the way.
Blow bubbles
And do tumbles
And laugh the day away.
My rest will be but for a moment
And it will be light,
Forgotten in the blink
Of an eye.
But you will
Remember these
Days all of your life.
Go now,
Play on the swings
Make a childhood
Worth remembering,
Something real.
Oh, my child,
when you are a parent
You too will need
Just a moment to
Rest up for a while.
